Production Ampelomyces quisqualis produces spores by semi-solid or submerged fermentation, and the spores serve as the active ingredient of the WG formulation. History The fungus Ampelomyces quisqualis is a species of the order Coleomycetes subdivision deuteromycotina previously named Cicinnobiolum cesatii but renamed in 1959 with the current A.q. designation. The fungus is a well-known hyperparasite of the Erysiphaceae genus, a pathogenic fungus that causes powdery mildew diseases. In 1984, an isolate of A.q. was discovered in an arid zone of Israel and was thereafter designated AQ isolate No. M-10 or AQ10. This isolate was licensed to and was developed by Ecogen Israel Partnership, Jerusalem (a subsidiary of Ecogen, ). The WG formulation was introduced in 1995.   5190754  Ecogen

Germinating spores suppress the development of powdery mildew by hyperparasitism. This process requires relative humidity of at least 60% in the microenvironment of the germinating spores. Once inside hyphae of the pathogen - following a process that takes 2-4 hours - the hyperparasite can propagate independently of the external environment; the end result is cessation of powdery mildew development.  Selective fungal hyperparasite. Used to control powdery mildew in apples, cucurbits, grapes, ornamentals, strawberries, and tomatoes. Although each crop is attacked by a different species of the powdery mildew pathogen, may hyperparasitise all of them to a similar extent. The product has been employed as part of integrated pest management programmes and in alternation with standard chemical mildewicides. It is commonly applied by standard spray application techniques in the presence of surfactants that are compatible with the viability of the organism.  Not phytotoxic or phytopathogenic.  .
